Hello there, After writing my first technical blog(don’t know if this is called a blog or a document) on setting up Appium on windows Mobile Automation – Appium Environment Setup on Windows Now moving forward to setting up Appium on Mac which is bit tricky and very less resources i have found on internet.The challenges what i had faced while this setup will surely help you to move forward without any hurdle.

I will not be repeating like what is importance of Appium in mobile automation again.You can go to above link and read from there.Before starting setting up on mac it would be good if you have basic idea of mac tools and terminologies like Terminal, Xcode etc. So Let’s start.

Pre-requistes

• JDK Installation
• Setting up Java_Home
• Xcode Installation
• Appium download and Installation
• Additional dependencies Installation

JDK Installation

Download Appium For Windows

• Go to this http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html
• Select ‘Accept License Agreement’ and Click Download link corresponding to Mac OS X

• Once file gets downloaded, double click on the file. ‘Java Development Kit’ pop up window will appear. Double click on the icon.

• Follow the installation walkthrough

• Once the installation steps finished. Open Terminal in mac(Shortcut to open : command+space)

• In Terminal window type this command: java -version

If the Terminal command returns with installed java version then JDK is successfully installed in your mac.

Setting up Java_Home

• Open terminal
• Run this command: vim~/.bash_profile

Note: If the above command throw an error as .bash_profile does not exit then you need to create one by running this command: $touch~/.bash_profile

• Run this command: export JAVA_HOME=$(/usr/libexec/java_home) then Hit Escape Key to return to Command mode. Hit : (colon) then wq to save and exit

• Open Terminal again and run: $source~/.bash_profile
• Update the PATH variable by setting bin of Java_Home. run: $export PATH=${JAVA_HOME}/bin:$PATH
• All set with java setup.

Xcode Installation

• Open App Store. Search for Xcode. Look for an App as shown in the snapshot below.

• Once downloaded install it.To check and install latest Xcode, open terminal and run this command: $ xcode-select –install

Appium download and Installation

• Go to Appium1.6.2
• Download and install the above .dmg file
• That’s all Appium desktop is installed.

Note: To install Appium via npm, use this command in terminal: $ npm install -g appium This will install the latest Appium available on GitHub.To verify if Appium installed or not user this command: appium -v

Additional dependencies Installation

Install Homebrew

• Open a terminal and run: $ /usr/bin/ruby -e “$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)”
• Test install by running: $ brew –version. You should see something like Homebrew 1.7.1

Install Carthage

• Open a terminal and run: $ brew install carthage

Download Appium Desktop

Here you go. All set to start mobile automation on mac.

Apart from this while using a Real device(assuming you have enabled Developer mode) i had faced a basic issue and in Appium logs the error was Could not initialize ideviceinstaller. This simply means that to run your automation script on real device you need to install ideviceinstaller. Once you had finished with Homebrew installation above run this command: brew install ideviceinstaller . This will install ideviceinstaller and surely remove this error.

Install Appium Mac
